Barcelona in one day on foot: a walking itinerary

This Barcelona one day walking itinerary starts at the Sagrada Família, walks down Passeig de Gràcia past two Gaudí houses, eats lunch in La Boqueria, and spends the afternoon in the Gothic Quarter and El Born. Dinner is on Carrer de Montcada. That's eight stops in one direction, all on foot once you reach the basilica.

I built the day in Passage AI in October 2026 for a Wednesday. I added the eight stops, ran Optimize on the order and ran the Need tickets? scan. Hours, prices and booking rules below are checked against each venue's official site and linked where they appear.

Last checked: Oct 2026. Prices and hours change. Open the linked official page before you go.

Stop by stop

Passage AI Plan list for Wednesday 21 October with eight Barcelona stops in order, from the Sagrada Família to El Xampanyet, and walk, drive and bike minutes between each pair
The Plan list in Passage AI, with the walk time to each next stop.

1. Sagrada Família, 9:00

Start with the one stop that needs a fixed time. Tickets for the Sagrada Família are sold online only, so book a 9:00 entry before you fly. The basic ticket is €26 and includes the audio guide app; adding a tower makes it €36, and under-11s go free. (official prices)

In October the basilica opens 9:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 18:00 on Saturday and 10:30 to 19:00 on Sunday. From November to February it's 9:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:30 to 18:00 on Sunday. Individual visitors use the general entrance on the Nativity façade, on Carrer de la Marina. (official hours)

It's a working church, so the dress code is enforced: no see-through clothing, shorts and skirts to at least mid-thigh, no swimwear, no hats in the nave. (official rules)

Give it a good two hours with the audio guide, longer with a tower.

2. Casa Milà (La Pedrera), 11:15

From the basilica it's 18 minutes on foot to Gaudí's last private residence, built between 1906 and 1912. On this plan you see it from the street, which is free: the wavy stone façade and iron balconies are the point.

If you want the rooftop with its chimneys, the La Pedrera Essential ticket is €29 for adults, runs 9:00 to 17:30 with last entry at 17:15, and the visit takes about an hour and a half. (official ticket page)

3. Casa Batlló, 11:45

Six minutes down Passeig de Gràcia, at number 43. Gaudí redesigned this existing house in 1904, and the mosaic front with its scaled roof is the photo everyone comes for. Casa Amatller, with the stepped gable, stands next door.

Casa Batlló is open every day of the year until 22:30, with last admission at 21:30, and the inside visit takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. (official visit page) That late closing is useful: you can come back after dinner for the inside visit and keep the middle of the day for walking. The inside visit is a paid ticket; check the price for your time slot when you book.

4. La Boqueria for lunch, 12:30

Fifteen minutes south, through Plaça de Catalunya and down La Rambla, to the market at Rambla 91. La Boqueria has been in the centre of the city since 1836, and more than 200 traders open their stalls each day. The market is open Monday to Saturday, 8:00 to 20:30, so this day doesn't work as written on a Sunday. (official site)

Eat at one of the counter bars inside or buy fruit, ham and cheese from the stalls. There's nothing to book.

5. Barcelona Cathedral, 14:00

Six minutes into the Gothic Quarter. The cathedral was built from the 13th to the 15th centuries, and its cloister, finished in 1448, holds the Well of the Geese. The neo-Gothic front facing the square came much later, in the late 19th century.

Tourist visits on weekdays run 9:30 to 18:30, with the doors closing to visitors at 17:45. Saturdays are 9:30 to 17:15, Sundays only 14:00 to 17:00. A ticket is €16 (€14 for students up to 25). The main gate is on Pla de la Seu. (official visiting hours)

6. Museu Picasso, 15:00

Five minutes east into El Born, to Carrer de Montcada. The museum opened in 1963 and fills five medieval palaces on the street. Until 29 March it's open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 19:00, and it's closed every Monday. A ticket for the collection and the temporary exhibition is €12 online or €13 at the ticket office. Entry is free on Thursdays from 16:00 to 19:00 and on the first Sunday of the month, but you still have to reserve. (official hours and tickets)

Plan on about an hour and a half here.

7. Santa Maria del Mar, 16:45

The basilica is 2 minutes away, at the bottom of the Born. Built between 1329 and 1383, the basilica is a landmark of Catalan Gothic, built in one consistent style, which is rare for a medieval church this big.

The cultural visit costs €8 and includes the galleries, the crypt, the towers and the roof terraces. It runs Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 18:00 and Sunday 13:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30. That's why this stop sits at 16:45. Outside cultural visit hours, entering the basilica itself is free. (official hours and fees)

After the roof, you have time to walk Passeig del Born and the lanes around it before dinner.

8. El Xampanyet, 19:00

Dinner is a minute's walk back up Carrer de Montcada, at El Xampanyet, number 22. It's open Tuesday to Friday 12:00 to 15:30 and 19:00 to 23:00, Monday evenings only, Saturday lunch only, and closed on Sunday. It takes no reservations, so arrive when the doors open at 19:00. (official site)

How Optimize ordered the day

Passage AI Optimize preview reading Smoother day found, minus 1 minute walking, with El Xampanyet moved up from 8th and Santa Maria del Mar moved down from 7th, and Keep as is and Apply new order buttons
Optimize's preview: "Smoother day found, −1 min walking", with each moved stop's old position.

The route already runs in one direction, from the basilica down to the Born, so the order starts out close to the shortest walk. Optimize found an order with 1 minute less walking: dinner at El Xampanyet before Santa Maria del Mar, which sit a minute apart. Both orders work. I kept the original so dinner closes out the day; tap Apply new order if you'd rather take the shorter walk.

Optimize shows the preview with each moved stop's old position first, and nothing changes until you press Apply.

What Need tickets? flagged, checked against the official sites

Passage AI Need tickets? sheet titled Worth booking ahead, flagging the Sagrada Família, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló and Museu Picasso as Likely and Barcelona Cathedral and El Xampanyet as Maybe, with official site links
Need tickets? scanned the day and flagged six stops as worth booking ahead.

Need tickets? scans the whole trip and marks the stops that usually need booking, with a link to each official site. It flagged six of the eight:

Stop App said Official site says (Oct 2026) My call
Sagrada Família Likely Online sales only, from €26 Book ahead
Casa Milà Likely Essential ticket €29, last entry 17:15 Book if going inside
Casa Batlló Likely Open daily, last admission 21:30 Book if going inside
Museu Picasso Likely €12 online, closed Mondays Book ahead
Barcelona Cathedral Maybe €16, weekday access until 17:45 Book if your date is fixed
El Xampanyet Maybe No reservations Arrive at 19:00

The scan put La Boqueria and Santa Maria del Mar in the lower-priority, walk-in group. That fits the official pages: the market has no tickets, and the basilica's €8 cultural visit is sold at the ticket office as well as online.

When you reach a stop, Passage AI's Guide opens a card like this one with the story of the place. Tap Listen to hear it read aloud while you queue at the Nativity façade.

What to skip or swap

  • Best days: Tuesday to Friday. On Mondays the Picasso Museum is closed and El Xampanyet opens only in the evening. On Sundays La Boqueria and El Xampanyet are both closed, the Sagrada Família opens at 10:30 and the cathedral's tourist visit is only 14:00 to 17:00.
  • Short on budget? Keep the Sagrada Família ticket and see the rest from outside. Both Gaudí houses on Passeig de Gràcia, the cathedral square and the lanes of the Born cost nothing to walk past, and Santa Maria del Mar is free to enter outside its cultural visit hours.
  • Want one Gaudí interior besides the basilica? Pick one. La Pedrera's rooftop needs a daytime slot before 17:15. Casa Batlló takes visitors until 21:30, so it fits after dinner.
  • Going in November or later? From November to February the Sagrada Família closes at 18:00 and still opens at 9:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, so the morning start holds.
