Bentonville, AR one day itinerary: a walking day of free museums
This Bentonville, AR one day itinerary is built for walking, and every museum on it is free to enter. You start at an 1875 house museum on the west side, cross town past more than 10,000 Native American artifacts and the dime store where Walmart began, then follow a one-mile trail through Compton Gardens to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the Frank Lloyd Wright house on its grounds. Dinner is in a restored 1898 church steps from the square. You pay for lunch, dinner and maybe an ice cream.
I built the day in Passage AI for a Thursday in November 2026, added the stops in order, set a time for each, and ran the Need tickets? scan over it. Hours, prices and ticket rules are checked against each venue's official site and linked below.
Last checked: Nov 2026. Hours change with the seasons. Open the linked official page before you go.
Which day to go
Pick a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Three closures shape the week:
- Crystal Bridges is closed on Tuesdays.
- The Museum of Native American History is closed Sundays and Mondays.
- The Peel Museum opens Tuesday to Saturday only.
Saturday works too, with one swap: The Hive serves brunch instead of lunch on weekends. Thursday and Friday give you the most time at Crystal Bridges, because its galleries stay open until 8 pm on those days.

Stop by stop

1. Peel Museum & Botanical Garden, 10:00
An 1875 Italianate-style house at 400 S. Walton Blvd, with preserved rooms, artifacts and seasonal gardens. It opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and you can explore at your own pace or join a guided tour. Both are free. (official page)
It sits under a mile west of the square, so if you're staying downtown, start with a short walk out. Starting here at opening time leaves the afternoon for Crystal Bridges.
2. Museum of Native American History, 11:00
A short walk west on SW O Street, this museum holds more than 10,000 artifacts arranged by period: Paleo, Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian and Historic, plus a pre-Columbian Mesoamerica section. Admission is free. It's open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm, and closed Sundays and Mondays. (official site)
Arriving at 11 puts you in as the doors open. An hour is enough for a first look.
3. Walmart Museum and Walton's 5&10, 12:15
From here it's the long leg of the day, east to the square. The Walmart Museum stands on the square, and Walton's 5&10, part of the museum, is the dime store "where it all began," in the museum's own words. Inside, the Spark Café still serves butter pecan ice cream, Sam Walton's favorite flavor. Admission is free. Hours are Monday to Thursday 10 am to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am to 10 pm, and Sunday noon to 6 pm. It's closed on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. (official page)
The museum stays open late, so if you'd rather keep your energy for Crystal Bridges, you can come back after dinner instead (Monday to Saturday it's open until 9 or 10 pm).
4. Lunch at The Hive, 1:00
The Hive is the restaurant inside 21c Museum Hotel, a minute from the square. Lunch runs Monday to Friday, 11 am to 2 pm. On Saturdays and Sundays it serves brunch over the same hours instead. The site lists a phone number for reservations. (official site)
If you'd rather eat later, Eleven at Crystal Bridges serves lunch Wednesday to Monday, 11 am to 2:30 pm, with no reservations required. (museum dining page)
5. 21c Museum Hotel galleries, 2:00
After lunch, walk through the hotel's art spaces. 21c runs its contemporary art exhibitions as a museum that is open around the clock and free of charge. (21c museum page) What's on display rotates.
6. Compton Gardens on the Crystal Bridges Trail, 2:30
You reach Crystal Bridges through the woods. The Crystal Bridges Trail is a one-mile hard-surface path, part of the city's trail system and the Razorback Greenway, that runs from NE 3rd Street to NE A Street at the northern edge of the museum grounds, and it passes through Compton Gardens on the way. From the trail, the half-mile Art Trail leads past sculptures and water to the museum's south entrance. (museum trails page)
Compton Gardens is open sunrise to sunset. (official page) The museum trails keep the same sunrise-to-sunset hours, and in November the sun sets early, so plan to be inside the museum by late afternoon.
7. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, 3:00
Crystal Bridges opened on 11 November 2011, founded by Alice Walton, and its collection covers five centuries of American art. The collection is always free to view. (about the museum) Temporary exhibitions can carry a fee: this year's America 250: Common Threads cost $15 for adults. Check what's on before you go.
Gallery hours (official page):
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday, Wednesday | 11 am to 6 pm |
| Thursday, Friday | 11 am to 8 pm |
| Saturday, Sunday | 10 am to 6 pm |
| Tuesday | Closed |
It's also closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. On weekdays the lobby opens at 10 am and the galleries at 11.

When you reach a stop, Passage AI's Guide opens a card like this with the story of the place. Tap Listen to hear it read aloud while you walk the galleries.
8. Bachman-Wilson House, 5:00
On the museum grounds stands a Frank Lloyd Wright house. Wright designed it in his Usonian style for Gloria and Abraham Wilson, and it was built in 1956 beside the Millstone River in New Jersey. The architects Lawrence and Sharon Tarantino bought it in 1988 and restored it. Later it was taken apart, each piece labeled and packed, and rebuilt at Crystal Bridges in 2015. (official page)
Self-guided entry is free, but you need a ticket because capacity is limited. Reserve online, by phone at (479) 657-2335, or at Guest Services in the main lobby. (ticket page) A free audio tour in English and Spanish waits at the house entrance. Guided one-hour tours cost $12 plus tax (free for members and anyone 18 and under) and meet in the museum's south lobby 10 minutes before the start. The house keeps the museum's hours, and photos are allowed outside only, not inside.
Reserve a house slot online the day before, or at Guest Services when you arrive. A 5 pm slot on a Thursday still leaves time for a last loop of the galleries before you walk back.
9. Dinner at The Preacher's Son, 7:00
Walk back down the Crystal Bridges Trail toward town for dinner in a church. The building was finished in 1898 and served as the First Christian Church of Bentonville for nearly a century before it became a restaurant in 1970. The dining room under the bell tower hangs 288 small gold bells. It's at 201 NW A St, steps from the square, and the main dining room serves Sunday to Thursday 5 pm to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 5 pm to 10 pm. It's closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and takes reservations on its site. (hours and location, our story)
In November it will be dark by the time you leave Crystal Bridges. The trail has a hard surface, but if you'd rather walk on streets, Directions in Passage AI hands the route to your maps app.
What Need tickets? flagged, checked against the official sites

Need tickets? scans the whole trip, marks the stops that usually need booking, and links you to each official site. For this day it listed three:
| Stop | App said | Official site (Nov 2026) | My call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachman-Wilson House | Likely | Free timed tickets, limited capacity | Reserve ahead |
| Crystal Bridges | Likely | Collection free; some exhibitions ticketed | Check what's on |
| Museum of Native American History | Maybe | Free admission | Walk in |
It marked the Peel Museum, the Walmart Museum and four more stops as lower priority or walk-in friendly, which matches their sites: the Peel Museum, the Walmart Museum, 21c and Compton Gardens are all free. For the two meals, The Hive lists a phone number for reservations and The Preacher's Son takes bookings on its site, so reserve dinner if your date is fixed.
What to skip or swap
- Short on time? Skip the west side. Drop the Peel Museum and the Native American history museum, start at the Walmart Museum at 10 am, and you gain two hours at Crystal Bridges.
- Add The Momentary. Crystal Bridges opened this contemporary art space downtown in 2020, at 507 SE E St, and general admission is free. (about Crystal Bridges) It's open Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 10 am to 6 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am to 8 pm, and closed Mondays. (The Momentary) It sits southeast of the square, the other way from Crystal Bridges, so it fits best as a second morning.
- Going on a Sunday? The Peel Museum and the Native American history museum are both closed, and the Walmart Museum opens at noon. Start at Crystal Bridges at 10 am, walk the trail back to town for the Walmart Museum, and add The Momentary in the afternoon.
- Going on a Monday? The Peel Museum, the Native American history museum and The Momentary are all closed. Crystal Bridges (11 am to 6 pm), the Walmart Museum and 21c still make a good half day.
- Avoid Tuesdays for this route: Crystal Bridges and the Frank Lloyd Wright house are closed.
- Staying longer in the Ozarks? Pair this day with a walking day in Eureka Springs, the Ozark spring town that grew up around 1880.
