Boston in one day on foot: a walking itinerary
This Boston one day walking itinerary follows the Freedom Trail from Boston Common to Charlestown: twelve stops, from the gravestones of John Hancock and Samuel Adams to the steeple where the lanterns for Paul Revere hung and the deck of a Navy ship launched in 1797. Lunch is pizza in the North End and dinner is in a Charlestown tavern that opened in 1780.
Most of the planning here is about opening hours. Three of the sites close on Mondays and Tuesdays in the off-season, the Bunker Hill Monument only opens for the afternoon, and USS Constitution closes at 4:00. This plan is timed around those hours, for a Friday.
I built the day in Passage AI in October 2026: twelve stops in trail order, a time on each, then the Need tickets? scan. I checked hours, prices and ticket rules against each site's official page, linked in each stop below.
Last checked: Oct 2026. Old South, the Old State House and the Paul Revere House all change their hours in November. Open the linked official page before you go.

The Boston one day walking itinerary, stop by stop

1. Boston Common, 9:00
The Freedom Trail starts at the Boston Common Visitor Center, and the red-brick line on the pavement takes you from here to Charlestown. The city founded the Common in 1634 and calls it America's oldest park. Colonial militia mustered here, and British troops camped on it from 1768. It's a public park, so there's nothing to book. (City of Boston)
2. Massachusetts State House, 9:20
The gold dome at the top of Park Street, across Beacon Street from the Common, designed by Charles Bulfinch. This plan views it from outside. If you want to go in on a tour, check the Legislature's visit page before you go.
3. Granary Burying Ground, 9:35
Set aside in 1660, with about 2,345 gravestones and tombs and more than 5,000 people buried. Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Robert Treat Paine, Paul Revere and James Otis are here, and so are the five victims of the Boston Massacre. The city lists it as open daily from about 9:00 to 4:00, and it's free. (City of Boston)
4. Old South Meeting House, 10:00
Built in 1729 and one of the largest buildings in colonial Boston, which is why the big protest meetings happened here, including the one that set off the Boston Tea Party. It opens at 10:00. Its immersive exhibit, Ruckus!, starts at 15 minutes past each hour, so a 10:00 arrival lines you up for the 10:15 show.
One ticket covers this and the Old State House: $18 adults, $16 seniors, $10 ages 6 to 17, free for 5 and under. Both sites are open daily 10:00 to 6:00 in October 2026 and 10:00 to 5:00 in November and December. Sales are final. (Revolutionary Spaces hours, admission)
5. Old State House, 10:45
Built in 1713 as the seat of royal government. The Boston Massacre happened in front of it on 5 March 1770, and on 18 July 1776 the Declaration of Independence was read to Boston for the first time from its balcony. Same ticket as Old South. (Revolutionary Spaces)
6. Faneuil Hall, 11:30
Opened in 1742 and known as the Cradle of Liberty. Admission is free on all floors. From 13 October the Great Hall is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 4:30, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Park rangers give free 15-minute talks in the Great Hall at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30, Wednesday to Sunday, so an 11:30 arrival catches one. The hall sometimes closes for city events; in October 2026 that's the 4th, 9th, 15th, 19th and 20th. (NPS: Faneuil Hall, NPS hours)
7. Paul Revere House, 12:00
Revere's home in North Square during the Revolution, now a museum. It's open daily 10:00 to 5:15 through 31 October. Individual visitors buy tickets at the admissions booth when they arrive and tour it on their own; only groups book ahead. Check the official site for the current price and for winter hours from November.
8. Lunch at Regina Pizzeria, 12:30
The original Regina, at 11 1/2 Thacher Street, has served brick-oven pizza in the North End since 1926. It opens at 11:00 every day and closes at 10:00 (9:00 on Sundays). (official site)
9. Old North Church, 1:15
On 18 April 1775 two lanterns hung in this steeple: "two if by sea". The bell chamber holds the oldest set of change-ringing bells in North America. Fall hours are 10:00 to 5:00 Tuesday to Saturday and 12:30 to 5:00 on Sunday. The Discovery Pass (sanctuary, crypt, exhibit and audio guide) is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12; add the 25-minute bell chamber tour for $15 adults. (Old North, NPS hours)
From here the trail climbs past Copp's Hill Burying Ground and crosses the bridge into Charlestown.
10. Bunker Hill Monument, 2:15
A 221-foot granite obelisk for the battle of 17 June 1775. Climbing the 294 steps is free. From 13 October to 28 May it's open 1:00 to 4:00, Wednesday to Sunday, with the last climb 30 minutes before closing, and only 25 people inside at a time. It can close for climbing in bad weather. The Bunker Hill Museum across the street keeps the same hours. (NPS)
That 3:30 last climb is why this plan goes to the monument before the ship.
11. USS Constitution, 3:00
Launched in 1797 and still a commissioned Navy ship with sailors aboard. Boarding is free, first come, first served, Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 4:00. Visitors 18 and over may need a federal or state photo ID at the security entrance. The ship is closed on 21 and 22 October 2026 for its underway and change of command. The USS Constitution Museum next to it is open daily 9:30 to 5:00 with suggested admission of $15, if you have time before dinner. (NPS hours, USS Constitution Museum)
12. Dinner at Warren Tavern, 5:00
Warren Tavern opened in 1780 and calls itself the oldest tavern in Massachusetts. It's open from 11:00 on weekdays and 10:00 on weekends, and takes reservations on its website. (official site)
How Optimize ordered the day

The trail order already keeps the walking short, and Optimize found one improvement: it put USS Constitution before the Bunker Hill Monument and saved 9 minutes of walking. Both orders work. I kept the monument first because its last climb is at 3:30 and the ship stays open until 4:00. If you're there early in the afternoon, tap Apply for the shorter walk.
Optimize shows a preview with each stop's old position, and nothing changes until you tap Apply.
What Need tickets? flagged, checked against the official sites

Need tickets? scans the whole trip, marks the stops that usually need booking and links each one to its official site. It listed four:
| Stop | App said | Official site says (Oct 2026) | My call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paul Revere House | Likely | Individual tickets at the admissions booth; groups reserve | Buy at the booth |
| USS Constitution | Maybe | Free, first come, first served; photo ID for 18+ | Bring ID, arrive by 3:00 |
| Regina Pizzeria | Maybe | Open daily from 11:00 | Check before you go |
| Warren Tavern | Maybe | Reservations on its website | Book dinner |
The other eight it marked as lower priority or walk-in. For the paid sites, the official pages list one $18 adult ticket for Old South and the Old State House together, and $10 for Old North's Discovery Pass. Boston Common, the Granary, Faneuil Hall and the Bunker Hill Monument are free.

When you reach a stop, Passage AI's Guide opens a card like this one with the story of the place. Tap Listen to hear it read aloud while you stand under the steeple.
What to skip or swap
- Pick Wednesday to Sunday. On Mondays and Tuesdays in the off-season, USS Constitution, the Bunker Hill Monument and the Faneuil Hall Great Hall are all closed. Sunday also works: Old North opens at 12:30 that day, before this plan's 1:15 slot.
- Visiting from November? Old South and the Old State House close at 5:00 instead of 6:00, and the Paul Revere House's 10:00 to 5:15 hours run only through 31 October. Check both official pages for the new hours.
- Short on time or budget? Skip the inside of the Old State House and Old South. The joint ticket is the biggest cost of the day at $18. The Massacre site is outside on the street, and both buildings are worth seeing from the pavement.
- Want a guide? The Freedom Trail Foundation runs its Walk Into History tour daily at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 1:00 and 2:00, covering 11 of the 16 official sites. Book on the Freedom Trail Foundation site.
- In Boston in late October? Old North runs 45-minute after-hours crypt tours at 6:00 and 6:45 PM nightly from 15 to 31 October, $20. That's a North End evening instead of dinner in Charlestown. (Old North)
