Bruges in one day on foot: a walking itinerary

This plan for one day in Bruges starts at the top of the Belfry and works south through the old centre: the Burg square with the Basilica of the Holy Blood and the Gothic City Hall, the canal view at the Rozenhoedkaai, lunch inside the De Halve Maan brewery, the quiet Beguinage, the Minnewater lake, and Michelangelo's Madonna in the Church of Our Lady to finish. The old centre is compact, so every walk between stops is short.

I built this day in Passage AI for a Thursday in November: eight stops, about 23 minutes of walking between them, with the Belfry first and the Church of Our Lady last. Hours, prices and booking rules are checked against the official sites and linked below.

Last checked: Oct 2026. Hours and prices change with the season. Open the linked official page before you go.

Stop by stop

Passage AI Plan list for the Bruges day: Belfry of Bruges at 10:00 AM, Basilica of the Holy Blood, Bruges City Hall, Rozenhoedkaai, De Halve Maan, Begijnhof, Minnewater and Church of Our Lady at 3:45 PM, with walk minutes between stops
The Plan list with a time for each stop and the walk to the next one.

1. The Belfry, 10:00

The 83-metre tower on the Markt is the symbol of the city and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. You climb 366 steps to the top, with the story of the tower told along the way, for the view over the rooftops and the country around. The museum is reached only by steep stairs, so it isn't a stop for anyone who can't climb.

In the winter season (3 November to 31 March) the Belfry opens 10:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 20:00 on Saturday and 9:00 to 18:00 on Sunday. From 1 April to 2 November it's open 9:00 to 20:00 every day. Last entry is an hour before closing. A standard ticket costs €15 in winter and €16 in summer and at weekends. Musea Brugge calls it a busy location and recommends booking online in advance. (official page)

The 10:00 start is the weekday winter opening. In summer, or on a Saturday, the Belfry opens at 9:00, so you can start an hour earlier.

2. Basilica of the Holy Blood, 11:15

A few minutes' walk east of the Markt is the Burg, the square that held the city's power for centuries. In its corner, the Basilica of the Holy Blood keeps the city's relic of the Holy Blood of Christ. The basilica is open every day 10:00 to 17:15 and entry is free. The museum and treasury cost €5 (free under 12). The relic is brought out for veneration in the upper basilica every day from 14:00 to 16:00, and during services part of the basilica is open only to people attending. (official site)

3. City Hall, 11:45

Next door is the City Hall (Stadhuis), built in the 14th century and still the seat of the city government. A big staircase leads to the Gothic Hall on the first floor, with early 20th-century murals of the city's history under a vault with its original 14th-century painted consoles. It's open daily 9:30 to 17:00, and a standard ticket is €8 (€4 under 18, free under 13). Weddings close the building on some Tuesday and Saturday mornings and Friday afternoons, which is one reason this plan uses a Thursday. On weekends the same ticket also covers the Liberty of Bruges (Brugse Vrije) on the same square. (official page)

4. Rozenhoedkaai, 12:30

A short walk south of the Burg, the Rozenhoedkaai is the bend in the canal with the Belfry rising behind the brick houses. It's one of the best-known views in Bruges, and it's a public quay, so there's nothing to book. The photo at the top of this page was taken from here.

5. Lunch at De Halve Maan, 1:00

De Halve Maan is a family brewery in the heart of Bruges whose story goes back to 1856. Its restaurant inside the brewery serves lunch 12:00 to 15:00, and on Thursday to Saturday it's also open for dinner 18:00 to 21:00. You only need to book for groups of more than 16. (restaurant page)

If you want the brewery tour as well, it runs about 45 minutes, includes one beer and costs €16. There are 220 steps on the tour, some of them steep. Book a time slot on the brewery's site and check the slots before you go.

6. The Beguinage, 2:30

The Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde was founded in 1245 for the beguines, lay women who led a pious, celibate life. White house fronts stand around a quiet convent garden, and it is still home to single women from Bruges and a few women with a religious vocation. Entry is free. The city asks visitors to walk through in silence, so keep your voice down for this part of the walk. Opening hours are shown in a calendar on the Visit Bruges page, so check before you go.

7. Minnewater, 3:00

South of the Beguinage gate, the Minnewater is a lake and park at the edge of the old town. It's a public space with nothing to book, and a good place to sit for a few minutes before the walk back north.

8. Church of Our Lady, 3:45

The last stop holds Michelangelo's marble Madonna and Child. It was made for an altar in Siena Cathedral, then bought by the Moucron family, Bruges merchants based in Italy, and shipped north. The church also holds the tombs of Charles the Bold and Mary of Burgundy, and its 115.5-metre tower is the second-highest brick tower in the world. The church itself is free. The museum section with the Madonna and the tombs costs €10 (€5 under 18, free under 13). It's open 9:30 to 17:00, and on Sundays from 13:30. Weddings and funerals sometimes close it, and the official page has a calendar with the day's hours. (official page)

Arriving at 3:45 gives you over an hour before closing.

How Optimize ordered the day

Passage AI Optimize preview reading Smoother day found, minus 7 min walking, moving the Church of Our Lady from 8th to 1:00 PM, with Keep as is and Apply new order buttons
Optimize's preview: "Smoother day found, −7 min walking", with each stop's old position.

Optimize found an order with 7 minutes less walking: it moves the Church of Our Lady up to 1:00, before lunch, then heads south to the brewery, the Beguinage and the Minnewater. Both orders work. I kept the church for the end of the day so lunch lands at 1:00 and the walk finishes at the Madonna; tap Apply if you'd rather take the shorter walk.

Optimize shows a preview with each stop's old position before anything changes, and nothing saves until you press Apply.

What Need tickets? flagged, checked against the official sites

Passage AI Need tickets? sheet for the Bruges day, listing which stops are worth booking ahead
Need tickets? scanned the day and flagged five of the eight stops as worth booking ahead.

Need tickets? scans the whole trip and marks the stops that usually need booking, with a link to each official site. It flagged five of the eight:

Stop App said Official site says (Oct 2026) My call
Belfry Likely Busy; online booking in advance recommended; €15 in winter Book ahead
De Halve Maan Likely Tour €16, book a slot online; lunch needs no booking under 17 guests Book the tour if you want it
Basilica of the Holy Blood Maybe Basilica free; museum €5 Nothing to book
City Hall Maybe €8; weddings close some time slots Book if your day is a Tuesday, Friday or Saturday
Church of Our Lady Maybe Church free; museum €10 Buy on the day

The app marked the Rozenhoedkaai, the Beguinage and the Minnewater as walk-in, which matches the official pages: the quay and the lake are public, and the Beguinage is free.

What to skip or swap

  • Want Flemish painting? Swap the City Hall for the Groeninge Museum, a few minutes south of the Burg, with Jan van Eyck and the other Flemish Primitives. It's open 9:30 to 17:00 in winter (10:00 to 18:00 from 1 April to 2 November), closed on Mondays, and a standard ticket is €15.
  • Want more of medieval Bruges? St John's Hospital sits across the street from the Church of Our Lady. It's open 9:30 to 17:00, closed on Mondays, €15.
  • Next door to the church, the Gruuthusemuseum is open 9:30 to 17:00 and closed on Wednesdays. A combined ticket with the Church of Our Lady museum costs €19.
  • Short on budget? Skip the inside of the City Hall and the brewery tour. The Burg, the Rozenhoedkaai, the Beguinage, the Minnewater and the church itself are all free.
  • Pick the day with care. Monday closes the Groeninge Museum and St John's Hospital, Wednesday closes the Gruuthusemuseum, and weekday mornings in winter the Belfry opens at 10:00. Thursday works for every stop in this plan.

FAQ

Is one day in Bruges enough?

One day covers the old centre on foot: the Belfry, the Burg, the canals, the Beguinage and the Church of Our Lady, with a sit-down lunch. It leaves out most of the museums. If you want the Groeninge Museum and St John's Hospital as well, give Bruges a second day.

Do you need to book the Belfry in advance?

You don't have to, but Musea Brugge calls it a busy location and recommends booking online in advance. In winter (3 November to 31 March) a standard ticket is €15, and €16 in summer and at weekends. Last entry is an hour before closing.

How much walking is this itinerary?

About 23 minutes of walking between the eight stops, using the straight-line walk times in Passage AI. The longest legs are the 8 minutes from the Rozenhoedkaai to De Halve Maan and the 7 minutes from the Minnewater back to the Church of Our Lady. Add the 366 steps of the Belfry and, if you take it, the 220 steps of the brewery tour.

Is the Beguinage free?

Yes. The Beguinage is free to enter, and the city asks visitors to keep quiet because people still live there. Opening hours are listed day by day on the Visit Bruges page, so check before you go.

What day of the week is best for this walk?

Tuesday to Friday works best, and Thursday is the easiest: every stop in this plan is open, and the City Hall doesn't hold weddings that day. Avoid Mondays if you want to add the Groeninge Museum or St John's Hospital, and Wednesdays if you want the Gruuthusemuseum.

How this was made: planned in Passage AI on 31 October 2026, facts checked against the official sites of Musea Brugge (Belfry, City Hall, Church of Our Lady, Groeninge Museum, Gruuthusemuseum, St John's Hospital), Visit Bruges, the Basilica of the Holy Blood and De Halve Maan, written by Edward.
