Do you need to book the Colosseum in advance? The 2026 rules
Do you need to book the Colosseum in advance? In practice, yes. Every visit to the Colosseum needs a reserved time slot, the ticket is issued in your name, and the one ticket office that sells the standard ticket on the day sells it subject to online availability. The arena and underground tickets can't be bought at the door at all. If the Colosseum matters to your trip, book it on the official site as soon as your date opens, 30 days ahead. Every rule below comes from the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, the state body that runs the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine.
Last checked: Nov 2026. The park changed its name-change rule and its on-site sales in spring 2026, so check the official page before you go.

| When sales open | 30 days before the visit date |
| Official seller | ticketing.colosseo.it |
| Standard ticket | €18 full, €2 reduced (EU citizens aged 18 to 25) |
| Arena and underground tickets | €18 to €24, online only |
| Name on ticket | Yes, show ID with it at the entrance |
| Hours, 25 Oct 2026 to 28 Feb 2027 | 8:30 to 16:30, last admission 15:30 |
| Closed | 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 |
| Free days | First Sunday of the month, 25 April, 2 June, 4 November |
The standard ticket is called Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine. It gets you one entry to the Colosseum at the time you booked, covering the first and second levels and the Colosseum Museum, plus one entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine area within 24 hours before or after that slot. Your time inside the Colosseum is 75 minutes on this ticket, per the park's ticket page. It does not include the arena floor.
In winter the Colosseum opens at 8:30 and the Roman Forum and Palatine at 9:00. Everything closes at 16:30, and the last admission is at 15:30, so a late slot leaves little time for the Forum the same afternoon.
Why you should book the Colosseum in advance
The time slot is compulsory. The official page says ticket sales come "with compulsory reservation of the time slot for entry to the Colosseum". The ticket FAQ adds that you can't enter at a different time from the one you booked. A ticket bought on the day is for a slot too.
Walk-up sales depend on online availability. Since 4 May 2026, the park's news page says the 24-hour Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket is sold on site only at the ticket office in Piazza del Colosseo, "without prejudice to online availability". The park doesn't publish how many same-day slots that office holds, so check before you go if you plan to buy there.
Arena, underground and attic tickets are online only. The FAQ says the 24h OnlyArena and the Full Experience tickets "must be booked". The Full Experience Attic tour takes at most eight people per visit. For the arena floor, the underground or the top tier, book online.
Where to buy Colosseum tickets
Buy on ticketing.colosseo.it, which the official page lists as the "official online booking". You don't need to print anything: the FAQ says the receipt on your phone is enough. For booking problems the park's helpdesk is helpdesk@ticketcolosseo.com, which answers in 48 to 72 hours. For trouble with a same-day entry, the call centre is +39 06 21115843.
Sales open 30 days before each date. For a visit on 10 December, sales open around 10 November. Set a reminder for that day.
Tour companies and resellers also sell Colosseum entry, often bundled with a guide. Your entry still has to match a named ticket and a time slot, so if you buy anywhere other than the official site, read the seller's terms before you pay.
Named tickets: bring ID that matches
Colosseum tickets are issued in the holder's name. The official page asks you to keep an ID document visible at the entrance, along with the ticket. If you're booking for friends or family, enter each person's real name exactly as it appears on their passport or ID card.
For visits from 9 May 2026, the park allows one name change per ticket, made by midnight on the seventh day before the visit, and only in three cases:
- an obvious typo in the first or last name;
- the wrong ticket type given to someone in the same purchase, such as a reduced ticket assigned to a paying adult;
- serious, documented reasons that stop the visit going ahead.
You request the change through the name-change form on the ticketing site. Inside the last week, or for any other reason, the name stays. Don't buy a spare ticket for "whoever comes along".
Buying Colosseum tickets on site
You can still walk up and buy a standard ticket, as long as slots are left. Since 4 May 2026 the rules are:
- Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine (24 hours): on site only at the ticket office in Piazza del Colosseo, subject to online availability.
- Forum Pass SUPER (Roman Forum, Imperial Fora and Palatine, no Colosseum): on site only at the offices in Largo della Salara Vecchia and Foro Romano 1.
- OnlyArena and the Full Experience tickets: online only.
The Forum Pass SUPER costs €18 and covers the Forum's extra sites, such as Santa Maria Antiqua and the Curia Iulia, per its ticket page. It's a good walk-up choice if the Colosseum slots are gone and you still want the Forum and Palatine that day.
Which Colosseum ticket to book
| Ticket | Full price | Colosseum areas | Time inside | Valid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine | €18 | 1st and 2nd levels, museum | 75 min | 24 hours |
| 24h OnlyArena | €18 | Arena floor only | 20 min | 24 hours |
| Full Experience Arena | €24 | 1st and 2nd levels, arena | 90 min | 2 days |
| Full Experience Underground and Arena | €24 | Arena, underground, museum | 90 min | 2 days |
| Full Experience Attic | €24 | 1st level, gallery, 3rd level, attic | 90 min | 2 days |
All of them include one entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine. The Full Experience tickets also open the SUPER sites in the Forum. The Underground and Arena page adds an option with an educational tour for €32. The reduced fare is €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25 on every ticket in the table.
The OnlyArena entrance is on the Sperone Stern side of the Colosseum, per its ticket page. On the other tickets you can start from either the Colosseum or the Forum and Palatine side.
The park's free MyColosseum app, on iOS and Android, has free audio guides in Italian and English for the Colosseum, from the underground to the attic.
Free days: the first Sunday of the month
Entry is free on the first Sunday of every month, and on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. The next first Sunday is 6 December 2026.
On free Sundays, the park's free Sundays page says they are handed out in order of arrival at the ticket office in Piazza del Colosseo, near the Temple of Venus and Rome. On those days the upper levels, the arena, the underground and the SUPER sites stay closed, and the Domus Aurea isn't part of it. Pick a paid day if you want the arena or a fixed time.
Under 18s go free on any day. The park's free tickets page says children under 18 still book their entry on ticketing.colosseo.it, so reserve their slot with yours. Check before you go if you plan to collect a free ticket at the office instead.
How I planned a Colosseum day in Passage AI
I built a one-day trip in Passage AI for Tuesday 17 November 2026 with the three sites the standard ticket covers: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine. A Tuesday in November falls in the winter hours, so the Colosseum opens at 8:30 and the Forum and Palatine at 9:00, with last admission at 15:30.

The plan is simple: book the first Colosseum slot of the morning, spend your 75 minutes inside, then walk to the Forum and up the Palatine on the same ticket. Optimize found an order with two minutes less walking, with the Palatine before the Forum. Both orders work. I kept the Forum second so the day ends up on the Palatine; tap Apply new order if you'd rather take the shorter walk. Walk times in the app are straight-line estimates between stops, and Directions opens your phone's maps app for the street route.
Need tickets? is the Passage AI check that scans a trip and flags the stops worth booking ahead, each with a short reason and a link. On this day it tagged the Colosseum and the Roman Forum "likely" and the Palatine Hill "maybe", noting that Colosseum timed-entry tickets sell out and that the Forum and Palatine come in a combo ticket with it. That matches the official rule: a time slot is compulsory, and one ticket covers all three.

Once you're there, the Guide tab opens each stop with a short story you can read, and Listen reads it aloud. After your Colosseum slot, the Roman Forum card is the next one up.

For the rest of Rome, what to book ahead in Rome sorts the city's sights by how early you need tickets, and the Pantheon and Vatican Museums posts cover two more Rome sights people ask about. My one-day Rome walking itinerary strings the centre together on foot.
