Galena, IL one day itinerary: Main Street and Grant's home on foot

This Galena, IL one day itinerary keeps you on foot from late morning to the last wine pour. It starts with the 11:00 tour of the Dowling House, the town's first stone building, then follows Main Street past the Old Market House and the DeSoto House Hotel. After lunch it crosses the Galena River to the house a group of Galena citizens gave Ulysses S. Grant in 1865, loops through Grant Park and along the river trail, and finishes at a tasting room on Main Street. The walks between the seven stops add up to about 30 minutes.

I built the day in Passage AI, with every hour, tour time and price checked against the official sites. Do this walk on a Thursday. It's the one weekday when every stop below is open: the Grant Home closes Monday and Tuesday, and the tasting room at the end of the day closes on Wednesdays.

Last checked: Oct 2026. Several Galena sites change hours or close for the season at the end of October. Open the linked official page before you go.

# Stop Suggested time Walk to next stop
1 Dowling House (11:00 tour) 10:50 about 2 min

Before 10:50 you have time for coffee and a first slow pass along Main Street. Nothing on this route opens earlier than the Grant Home at 9:00, and that one fits better after lunch.

Stop by stop

Passage AI plan list for Galena showing Old Market House, DeSoto House Hotel, Ulysses S. Grant Home, Grant Park, Galena River Trail and Galena Cellars with times and walk minutes
The Plan list in Passage AI with walk minutes between stops.

1. Dowling House, 10:50

John Dowling built this stone house in 1826 as a trading post and his family's home. It was the first stone building in Galena. The only way in is a 40-minute guided tour. Monday to Thursday, tours start at 11:00, 13:00 and 14:00, with more slots on Fridays and weekends. A ticket is $14, and children 12 and under go free. You buy tickets in person at the ticket office next door, first come first served, and each tour takes at most 16 people. The office opens at 10:50, which is why the day starts there. (official tour page)

Tours run daily from May to October 24, 2026, so this stop drops out after that date. The house is at 220 Diagonal Street, off the north end of Main Street.

2. Old Market House, 11:45

The city built this Greek Revival market hall in 1845 and 1846, and it served as Galena's market for 65 years, at the height of the river port and lead-mining boom. It also housed city government and, for years, two jail cells. Inside is a Grant exhibit with more than 1,500 artifacts. (Illinois state historic sites page)

One problem: the site's own visit page says the Old Market House is "Closed due to staffing shortage, opening soon!" (granthome.org), and the state page says May to October days and hours vary. Plan on seeing the outside, and check before you go by calling 815-777-3310 (Tuesday to Saturday) if you want the exhibit. It's at 123 North Commerce Street, one block below Main Street.

3. Main Street and the DeSoto House Hotel, 12:00

Galena's Main Street is one long run of 19th-century brick storefronts with more than 125 shops and restaurants. The tourism board makes a point of the lack of chain "brand" shops. (Visit Galena) Window shopping costs nothing, and many buildings carry plaques with their history. (Visit Galena, free things to do)

The DeSoto House Hotel is the Main Street stop in the plan. It opened in 1855 and calls itself the oldest operating hotel in Illinois. (official site) Have lunch anywhere along this stretch. The plan leaves the restaurant open, so pick one on the day and check its hours.

4. U.S. Grant Home, 1:45

On August 18, 1865, Galena threw a homecoming for General Grant, and a group of citizens presented him with a furnished house on Bouthillier Street. (granthome.org) The Italianate brick house was built in 1859 and 1860. Grant used it as his political and voting address and lived there during the 1868 presidential campaign. The rooms are furnished as they looked in the mid-1860s, and many of the pieces belonged to the Grant family. (state historic sites page)

From May to October the house is open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 16:45, and closed Monday and Tuesday. There's nothing to book: you walk in, and costumed interpreters give tours continuously. Tours take up to 16 people, the wait is 15 minutes or less, and you wait outdoors, so bring a layer. The suggested donation is $5 for adults and $3 for children. (plan your visit) The first floor is accessible through a rear entrance, and the second floor isn't.

From November 1, tours are by reservation only.

5. Grant Park, 2:45

Grant Park is on Park Avenue, and Passage AI measured it 4 minutes from the Grant Home. It's free and needs no ticket, so stay as long as you like before the trail.

6. Galena River Trail, 3:15

The Galena River Trail follows the river and is free for walkers and cyclists. (Visit Galena) The trail stop in the plan is on Park Avenue, close to the park. Walk out as far as you like, then turn back toward town. The tasting room is 9 minutes from the trail stop by Passage AI's count, so start back by about 3:50.

7. Galena Cellars tasting room, 4:00

The winery's downtown tasting room is at 111 North Main Street, with three floors of seating. On Thursdays it's open 11:00 to 17:00, so 4:00 leaves an hour. Sunday to Tuesday have similar daytime hours, Friday and Saturday run to 20:00, and Wednesday it's closed. (official page) The page adds that hours may vary, so check before you go. It also says pets aren't allowed at this location.

How Optimize ordered the day

I added the stops in Passage AI and ran Optimize before setting any times. It grouped the downtown stops and the riverside stops together, and I applied it. That's why the morning stays on the Main Street side of the river and the afternoon crosses to the Grant Home, the park and the trail. The times fit around the 11:00 Dowling House tour, and the day finishes with the wine tasting at 4:00.

Optimize shows the new order, with each moved stop's old and new time, before anything changes. Nothing saves until you press Apply.

What to book ahead

Nothing on this route takes an online booking, so you can plan Galena at short notice. The official sites say:

Stop How you get in (Oct 2026) My call
Dowling House $14 tour ticket, sold in person only, first come, 16 per tour Be at the ticket office at 10:50
U.S. Grant Home Walk in, suggested donation $5 adult, $3 child Nothing to book
Old Market House Listed as closed for staffing Check before you go
Galena Cellars Walk in, Wednesday closed Check hours on the day
Main Street, Grant Park, river trail Public and free Nothing to book

The only real risk is the Dowling House tour filling up on a busy day. If the 11:00 tour is full, take the 13:00 one after lunch and swap the morning around it.

The best day for this walk, and the end-of-October changes

  • Thursday is the only weekday when everything is open. The Grant Home closes Monday and Tuesday, and the tasting room closes Wednesday.
  • Friday or Saturday also work, with longer tasting room hours (to 20:00) and extra Dowling House tour slots. On those days you can add the Elihu B. Washburne House, home of one of the Galena Republicans who bought Grant his house. It opens only Friday 13:00 to 16:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 13:00, with a suggested $5 donation, and it closes for the season on November 1. (plan your visit)
  • After October 24, 2026 the Dowling House tours end for the season. From November 1 the Grant Home switches to tours by reservation only, and the Washburne House closes. A November day here needs a phone call or two first.

What to skip or swap

  • The history museum is closed for now. The Galena & U.S. Grant Museum on Bench Street says it is closed and that its new museum is expected to open by mid-November. (official site) Once it reopens, check its new address and hours and add it to the morning.
  • Short on time? Skip the river trail and go straight from Grant Park back to Main Street. That saves about an hour, and you still reach every stop with a closing time.
  • Not a wine drinker? End with an early dinner on Main Street instead.

FAQ

Can you see Galena in one day?

Yes, if you stay on foot in and around downtown. This plan covers the Dowling House, Main Street, the outside of the Old Market House, the U.S. Grant Home, Grant Park, a stretch of the river trail and a wine tasting, with about 30 minutes of walking between stops. Sites outside town need a car and a second day.

Is Galena walkable without a car?

The downtown is. All seven stops here sit within a few minutes of each other: Passage AI's longest leg between them was 9 minutes. The Grant Home and Grant Park are across the Galena River from Main Street, and the walk over is part of the day.

How much does the U.S. Grant Home cost?

Entry is by suggested donation: $5 for adults and $3 for children. From May to October it's open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 16:45, with walk-in tours. From November 1, tours are by reservation only.

Do you need to book the Dowling House tour?

You can't book it ahead. Tickets ($14, children 12 and under free) are sold in person at the ticket office, first come first served, with up to 16 people per tour. On Monday to Thursday the tours start at 11:00, 13:00 and 14:00. Tours run through October 24, 2026.

What is the best day of the week for a Galena day trip on foot?

Thursday, because the Grant Home closes Monday and Tuesday and the Galena Cellars downtown tasting room closes Wednesday. Friday and Saturday also work and add the Washburne House.

How this was made: planned in Passage AI on 10 October 2026, facts checked against the official sites of the U.S. Grant State Historic Sites, the Illinois state historic sites, the Dowling House tour operator, Galena Cellars, the DeSoto House Hotel, the Galena history museum and Visit Galena, written by Edward.
