Prague in one day on foot: a walking itinerary

This Prague one day walking itinerary starts at the top of the hill and works down. You begin at Prague Castle when its buildings open, drop into Malá Strana for St. Nicholas Church and the Lennon Wall, have lunch at Café Savoy, cross Charles Bridge, catch the Astronomical Clock on the hour, visit the Old-New Synagogue and finish with dinner at a beer hall in the Old Town. Eight stops, about 42 minutes of walking between them, and no leg longer than 9 minutes.

I built the day in Passage AI in October 2026 for a Wednesday. I added the eight stops, let Optimize set the order and gave each stop a time. Hours and prices are checked against the official sites and linked below.

Last checked: Oct 2026. Prices and hours change. Open the linked official page before you go.

Walk times in Passage AI are straight-line estimates between stops at walking pace (4.8 km/h), so 42 minutes works out to about 3.4 km. Tap Directions and your phone's maps app opens with the street route. From the castle to St. Nicholas, the street route runs downhill through the lanes below the castle.

The day is planned for a Wednesday in late October. The castle, St. Nicholas, the Old Town Hall and the Old-New Synagogue all open on Wednesdays.

Stop by stop

Passage AI day list for Prague: Prague Castle at 9:00 AM, St. Nicholas Church at 11:45 AM, Lennon Wall at 12:30 PM, Café Savoy at 12:45 PM, Charles Bridge at 2:15 PM, Prague Astronomical Clock at 2:45 PM, Old New Synagogue at 3:45 PM and Lokál Dlouhááá at 6:00 PM, with walk minutes between stops
The Plan list with each stop's time and the walk minutes between stops.

1. Prague Castle, 9:00

Start here because the historical buildings open at 9:00. Until 31 October the castle runs its summer season: the grounds are open 6:00 to 22:00 and the buildings 9:00 to 17:00. From 1 November the buildings close at 16:00. (official hours)

The Main circuit ticket covers St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica and Golden Lane. It costs 450 CZK for adults, 300 CZK reduced and 950 CZK for a family. The ticket is valid for two days, and you can enter each building once. Buy it at the information centres inside the castle; the official tickets page also links an online seller for the Main circuit. (price list PDF, tickets)

Give it close to three hours. The plan leaves 9:00 to about 11:30 for the circuit and the courtyards.

Late October closures. The castle lists two for 2026: the Old Royal Palace is closed 23 to 29 October, and on 28 October the whole castle area closes to the public at 15:00, with tickets on sale until 14:00. (current closures)

2. St. Nicholas Church, Malá Strana, 11:45

The domed church below the castle. It was built between 1704 and 1755 on the site of a 13th-century Gothic church and is often called the finest example of Prague Baroque. In October it's open Sunday to Thursday 9:00 to 18:00 and Friday to Saturday 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry 15 minutes before closing. Adult entry is 150 CZK. Photos are allowed without flash or tripod. (official hours and prices)

Don't mix it up with the other St. Nicholas Church on Old Town Square. This is the one in Malá Strana, on Malostranské náměstí.

3. Lennon Wall, 12:30

A wall on Velkopřevorské náměstí, a small square a few minutes south of St. Nicholas. After John Lennon was killed in 1980, someone painted his portrait here, and the wall turned into a place for messages under the communist government. People still paint on it. It's a public street, so there's no ticket and no opening time.

4. Lunch at Café Savoy, 12:45

Café Savoy is at Vítězná 5, at the southern edge of Malá Strana. By day it runs as a Viennese-style café, and the evening menu leans French. It's open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 22:00 and from 9:00 at weekends, and it takes reservations on its website. (official site)

Lunch gets an hour and a half before you cross the river.

5. Charles Bridge, 2:15

Prague's oldest bridge. Building started in 1357 under Charles IV, to replace the Judith Bridge that floods had damaged in 1342, and it was finished in 1402. The name Charles Bridge dates from 1870. The 30 statues of saints along it were added between 1683 and 1928, and there's a fortified tower at each end. (Prague City Tourism)

Crossing is free. Take your time from the Malá Strana side so the Old Town Bridge Tower is in front of you the whole way.

When you reach a stop, Passage AI's Guide opens a card like this one with the story of the place. Tap Listen to hear it read aloud while you walk across.

6. Old Town Hall and the Astronomical Clock, 2:45

The Old Town Hall was founded in 1338, and its Gothic tower carries the medieval astronomical clock. Every hour from 8 am to 11 pm the twelve apostles appear in the windows above the dial. Arriving at 2:45 gives you time to find a spot in the square before the 3:00 show. (Prague City Tourism)

After the show, go inside. The tour covers the tower and the historical rooms: the chapel, the state rooms and the Romanesque and Gothic underground. From April to December it's open daily 9:00 to 20:00, and a basic ticket costs 350 CZK. Prague City Tourism says it is the only official seller, at its own ticket offices and online, and that tickets bought elsewhere may not be valid. It also posts short-notice changes to the hours on the same page.

7. Old-New Synagogue, 3:45

A short walk north into Josefov, the old Jewish Town. The Old-New Synagogue was completed around 1270, and the Prague Jewish Community, which still prays here, calls it one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. Inside is the Early Gothic hall and the seat of Rabbi Loew; legend puts his Golem in the loft above you. (synagogue.cz)

From 18 October to 31 December 2026 it's open 9:00 to 17:00 (until 18:00 before that). On Fridays it usually closes an hour before Shabbat begins, and the Jewish Museum's sites around it are closed on Saturdays, so skip this stop on a Saturday. (opening hours)

The synagogue is run by the Jewish Community, not by the Jewish Museum. Check before you go what entry costs and whether a museum ticket covers it.

That leaves you free from about 4:30 until dinner. The Old Town lanes between Josefov and Dlouhá Street are a good place to spend it.

8. Dinner at Lokál Dlouhááá, 6:00

Lokál Dlouhááá opened in 2009 as the first of the Lokál beer halls. It pours beer from 12 tanks and serves Czech pub food. The restaurant's own site says it gets busy and recommends booking, which you can do there. Opening hours didn't show on the site when I checked, so confirm them when you book. (official site)

How Optimize ordered the day

Passage AI Optimize preview reading Smoother day found, minus 5 min walking, listing eight Prague stops with was 4th, was 3rd, was 8th and was 7th badges and buttons for Keep as is and Apply new order
Optimize's preview: "Smoother day found, −5 min walking", with each moved stop's old position.

I added the eight stops in about the order I'd walk them, with lunch before the Lennon Wall and dinner before the synagogue. Optimize found an order with 5 minutes less walking: 42 minutes in total, down from 47. The Lennon Wall moves ahead of lunch, since it sits between St. Nicholas and Café Savoy, and the synagogue comes before dinner, more than an hour before its 17:00 closing time.

Optimize shows a preview with each stop's old position before anything changes, and nothing saves until you tap Apply new order.

What to skip or swap

  • Short on time? Do the castle grounds only. The grounds open at 6:00, and walking the courtyards costs nothing. You'd skip the inside of St. Vitus and Golden Lane, which need the Main circuit ticket.
  • Want the rest of the Jewish Town? The Jewish Museum's five synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery share one ticket: CZK 600 for adults, valid for three opening days. The museum says a full tour takes two to three hours, and from 18 October it closes at 16:30, with ticket sales ending 30 minutes earlier. That doesn't fit after a castle morning, so give it its own morning, any day but Saturday. (admission)
  • Visiting from November? The castle buildings close at 16:00 from 1 November, and St. Nicholas opens 9:00 to 17:00 every day that month. The plan still works, since both are morning stops.
  • Avoid 28 October for this route: it's the day the castle area closes at 15:00. Between 23 and 29 October the Old Royal Palace is closed too.

FAQ

Can you see Prague in one day on foot?

You can see the core of it. This plan covers Prague Castle, Malá Strana, Charles Bridge, the Old Town Square with the Astronomical Clock and the Old-New Synagogue, with a long lunch and dinner. The Jewish Museum's synagogues and cemetery need a second morning.

How much walking is this itinerary?

About 42 minutes between stops, measured in straight lines at 4.8 km/h. That's about 3.4 km. The longest leg is the 9-minute walk from Café Savoy to Charles Bridge. The street route from the castle to Malá Strana runs downhill.

Do you need to book Prague Castle tickets in advance?

The castle sells Main circuit tickets at its information centres, and its tickets page links an online seller for the Main circuit. Adults pay 450 CZK, and the ticket stays valid for two days, with one entry per building.

When does the Prague Astronomical Clock show happen?

Every hour from 8 am to 11 pm, according to Prague City Tourism. The twelve apostles appear in the windows above the clock face. Watching from the square is free. Going up the tower is part of the 350 CZK Old Town Hall ticket.

What day of the week is best for this walk?

Sunday to Thursday. Avoid Saturday, when the Jewish Museum's sites are closed, and plan Friday with care, since the Old-New Synagogue usually closes an hour before Shabbat. In late October 2026, avoid the 28th, when the castle closes at 15:00.
