Red Wing, Minnesota in one day on foot: a walking itinerary
This Red Wing, MN one day itinerary keeps you on foot from 9:00 to late afternoon. You start with stoneware in the West End, climb College Hill for the county museum and its view over the river valley, eat lunch downtown, see the world's largest boot, and finish on top of He Mni Can (Barn Bluff), the 340-foot bluff at the east end of town. Seven stops, about 44 minutes of walking between them, plus the hike.
I built the day in Passage AI for a Saturday in October 2026. I added the seven stops, let Optimize set the order, and gave each stop a time. Hours, prices and trail details are checked against the official sites and linked below.

Best days: Tuesday to Saturday. The pottery museum is closed on Mondays. The history center and the bakery are closed on Sundays and Mondays. On Saturdays the history center closes at 3:00 PM, which is why it comes early in the day.
Stop by stop

1. Pottery Museum of Red Wing, 9:00
The museum is at 240 Harrison Street in the historic West End District. It covers Red Wing stoneware, art pottery and the dinnerware that came out of the town's potteries. Admission is free; it's a nonprofit run on donations. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, closed Monday. (official site, Visit Red Wing listing)
Give it about an hour, more if you collect.
2. Goodhue County History Center, 10:15
The history center sits up on College Hill at 1166 Oak Street, in a building the county historical society moved into in 1969. The society was chartered in 1869, which makes it the oldest county historical society in Minnesota. The visitor bureau's own listing says the museum is worth visiting for the view of the downtown river valley. (Visit Red Wing listing)
Hours are Tuesday to Friday 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, closed Sunday and Monday. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for ages 13 to 18, and free for 12 and under. (official visit page)
3. Levee Park, 11:30
Walk down the hill to the river. Levee Park is the city's riverfront park, with benches, big trees, monuments (including the Sea Wing Memorial) and views up and down the Mississippi. It's still the landing for passenger riverboats, and the promenade along the water was rebuilt in 2019 and 2020. It's a public park, so there's nothing to book. (City of Red Wing)
4. St. James Hotel, 12:00
Two minutes from the river, at 406 Main Street. The St. James opened in 1875 and marked 150 years in 2025. Besides the rooms, it has the Scarlet Kitchen and Bar, a bar called the Port, a day spa and two shops, Rak Boutique and Clementine Flowers. The restaurant and bar take their own reservations, so book ahead if you'd rather have lunch or dinner here. (Visit Red Wing listing)
5. Lunch at Hanisch Bakery and Coffee Shop, 12:30
Hanisch is at 410 West 3rd Street. It's a bakery with a café side that does deli sandwiches, soup, coffee and hand-scooped ice cream, and a wall of donuts and pastries. It's open Tuesday to Saturday until 4:00 PM and closed Sunday and Monday. (official site, Visit Red Wing listing)
6. Red Wing Shoe Co. museum and the world's largest boot, 1:30
The Red Wing Shoe flagship store at 315 Main Street holds a free, self-guided museum on the company's history. The world's largest boot stands inside: a size 638½, made from 80 hides of leather and more than 20 feet tall. Upstairs there are WWII-era Skytrooper boots, a virtual factory tour and a look at how the #877 boot is made. The same building has a Norman Rockwell art gallery and a bargain basement. (official museum page, Visit Red Wing listing)
The museum is open during store hours: Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The store lists Thanksgiving Day (26 November 2026) as closed. (store page)
7. He Mni Can (Barn Bluff), 2:45
He Mni Can (said heh-meh-NEE-cha) is the 340-foot bluff at the east end of downtown, and the city calls it one of the best-known natural features on the upper Mississippi. It's a sacred site of the Bdewakantunwan Dakota Oyate of the Prairie Island Indian Community. (City of Red Wing)
Every trail starts at the end of East Fifth Street. The easiest way to the top is the South Trail, 0.60 miles to the summit and 0.70 miles to the West Scenic Overlook. A short side trail goes to the G.A. Carlson Lime Kiln, built in 1882. The city's trail page warns of loose rocks, steep slopes and vertical drops and singles out the East Scenic Overlook, and says children should be with an adult. (trail information)
Visit Red Wing puts the hike at about 1.5 hours up and back at a moderate pace, and notes that the bluff can only be reached on foot. (Visit Red Wing) Starting at 2:45 gets you back down around 4:15. Wear proper shoes: there are several sets of steps.
The steps have their own story. In 1929 the Red Wing Kiwanis Club built a 450-step concrete stairway up the bluff. The road and bridge work of the late 1950s broke it up, and a new route followed in 1983. A plaque at the base of the steps on the south side says 114 of the original steps are still in place on the upper west end. (City of Red Wing)
How Optimize ordered the day

I added the seven stops in the order I first thought of them, with the pottery museum first. Optimize found a loop that cut the walking between stops from 74 minutes to 44. It put the two stops outside downtown first (the West End and College Hill), then everything downtown within a couple of minutes of each other, and saved the bluff for last because it sits at the east edge of town.
Optimize shows the new order as a preview first, with each stop's old position, and nothing changes until you press Apply.
What to book ahead
Almost nothing on this route needs a ticket. Checked against the official sites:
| Stop | Booking | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Pottery Museum of Red Wing | Walk in | Free |
| Goodhue County History Center | Walk in | $5 adult |
| Levee Park | Public park | Free |
| St. James Hotel restaurant and bar | Reserve separately | Check before you go |
| Hanisch Bakery | Walk in | Pay as you go |
| Red Wing Shoe museum | Walk in | Free |
| He Mni Can (Barn Bluff) | Public trails | Free |
The one thing worth booking is dinner, if you want it at the St. James. Guided tours at the history center cost extra; ask the center if you want one.
What to skip or swap
- Short on time or energy? Skip the history center. It's the only paid stop and the only uphill detour. Going straight from the West End to Levee Park keeps you near the river.
- Visiting on a Sunday? The pottery museum opens at 11:00 AM that day, and the history center and Hanisch are closed. Start downtown with the boot and the riverfront, do the pottery museum after lunch, and find another lunch spot.
- Want an easier walk than the summit? The city rates the Access Trail and the short Lime Kiln Trail as easy. They take you to the 1882 kiln at the foot of the bluff without the climb to the summit.
- Staying the night? You can sleep at the St. James on Main Street, steps from the Red Wing train depot, according to the visitor bureau.
