Venice in one day on foot: a walking itinerary
This Venice one day walking itinerary starts at St Mark's Basilica when the doors open, spends the late morning in the Doge's Palace, crosses the Grand Canal at the Rialto Bridge for lunch, and gives the afternoon to Titian and Tintoretto in San Polo before ending at the Salute as the light goes. The whole day is on foot, with one crossing of the Grand Canal at Rialto.
I built the day in Passage AI for a Thursday in November: seven stops added in order, a time on each, then Optimize and the Need tickets? scan. Hours, prices and booking rules are checked against each venue's official site and linked below.
Last checked: Nov 2026. Winter hours run from 1 November at most of these stops. Open the linked official page before you go.

Stop by stop

1. St Mark's Basilica, 9:30
The basilica opens at 9:30 Monday to Saturday, with last admission at 16:45 and closing at 17:15. On Sundays and public holidays the basilica itself opens at 14:00. Times can change for church events and bad weather. (official hours)
Tickets are named, and you enter only in the time slot you booked. Basilica admission is €10 for individual bookings at the Porta San Pietro entrance, and the full ticket with the Pala d'Oro, the Museum and the Horses Loggia is €30. (official prices) The 9:30 slot is the first of the day.
2. Doge's Palace, 10:30
Next door, facing the water, the Doge's Palace runs on winter hours from 1 November to 31 March: 9:00 to 18:00, last admission 17:00. From April to October it's 9:00 to 19:00. (official visitor information)
The palace is sold on the St Mark's Square Museums ticket (Doge's Palace, Museo Correr, the National Archaeological Museum and the Monumental Rooms of the Marciana Library) at €35, or €30 if you buy online at least 30 days before your visit. The audio guide in the MUVE app is included.
Give it about two hours, and you're out in time for lunch. For the rooms where the Republic's officials did their work, the museum also sells a guided Secret Itineraries tour; that ticket includes the rest of the palace and the other three museums.

When you reach a stop, Passage AI's Guide opens a card like this with the story of the place. Tap Listen to hear it read aloud while you queue.
3. Rialto Bridge and lunch, 13:00
Walk north through the lanes of San Marco to the Rialto Bridge. The stone bridge you cross today was designed by Antonio da Ponte and finished in 1591. It's free, and it's your one crossing of the Grand Canal for the day: from here on you're in San Polo and Dorsoduro.
Lunch is on the San Polo side of the bridge. I didn't pin a restaurant in the plan, so pick one in the streets past the bridge and check that it's open on your day.
4. Basilica dei Frari, 14:15
The big brick Franciscan church holds Titian's Assunta (1516 to 1518) above the high altar. Winter hours, from 1 November to Easter, are Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 18:00 and Sundays and holidays 13:00 to 18:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Visits pause during weddings, funerals and concerts. (official hours)
A full ticket is €8 at the desk (€5 over 65, €3 for students aged 12 to 29, free under 12). The Frari isn't part of the Venezia Unica or Chorus city passes. (official tickets)
5. Scuola Grande di San Rocco, 15:00
Next to the Frari, a minute's walk across the campo. The confraternity hired Tintoretto to paint its new headquarters, and the result is a cycle of Old and New Testament scenes that covers the walls and ceilings. It's open every day 9:30 to 17:30, and the ticket office closes at 17:00. (official site)
A full ticket is €12 (reduced €10), sold at the door only: the Scuola has no online sales. (official prices) It lists one-off closures on its extraordinary closing times page; in November 2026 that means the 3rd and the 15th. Check it the week before.
6. Gallerie dell'Accademia, 15:45
A walk south through Dorsoduro brings you to the Accademia, the city's gallery of Venetian painting, with Giorgione's The Tempest among the rooms. It's open Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 19:00, ticket sales end at 18:00, and staff start moving visitors out half an hour before closing. A full ticket is €15, and the gallery is free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month. (official hours and tickets)
The site recommends booking online on busy days for priority entry. Check its opening calendar for your date, since the hours above don't include Monday.
7. Santa Maria della Salute, 17:00
The Republic built the Salute to give thanks for the end of the 1630 plague. Baldassare Longhena designed it, and work began in 1631. Its winter hours (1 November to 31 March) are 9:30 to 12:30 and 15:00 to 17:30. Entry to the great central rotunda is free, with no ticket or offering. The sacristy is a separate paid visit. (official hours) The church notes that services or maintenance can limit access.
Arrive at 17:00 and you have half an hour inside. Then walk out to the Punta della Dogana at the tip of Dorsoduro for the view across the water to St Mark's, where the day began. To get back to San Marco on foot, retrace your steps over the Accademia Bridge.
How Optimize ordered the day

With all seven stops in, Optimize found an order with 3 minutes less walking: start at the Rialto Bridge, then St Mark's and the Doge's Palace, and work back through Dorsoduro and San Polo. Both orders work. I kept St Mark's first so the day opens with the first basilica slot at 9:30, and the Salute last for the view back across the water at the end of the day. Tap Apply if you'd rather take the shorter walk.
Optimize shows the new order with each stop's old position before anything changes, and nothing saves until you press Apply.
Need tickets? St Mark's, the Doge's Palace and the rest

Need tickets? scans the whole day and marks the stops that usually need booking, with a link to each official site. It listed five of the seven:
| Stop | App said | Official site says (Nov 2026) | My call |
|---|---|---|---|
| St Mark's Basilica | Likely | Named tickets, entry only in your booked slot, €10 | Book ahead |
| Doge's Palace | Likely | €35, or €30 online 30+ days ahead | Book early for the lower price |
| Gallerie dell'Accademia | Likely | €15; online booking gives priority on busy days | Book for a weekend or holiday |
| Scuola Grande di San Rocco | Maybe | €12 at the door; last entry 17:00 | Arrive before 17:00 |
| Basilica dei Frari | Maybe | €8 at the desk, €9.50 online | Pay at the door |
The app marked the Rialto Bridge and the Salute as walk-in, which matches the official pages: the bridge is a public street, and the Salute's main rotunda is free with no ticket.
Need tickets? covers booking. Opening days for each stop are in the stop-by-stop notes above.
What to skip or swap
- Prefer modern art? Swap the Accademia for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. It sits on the Grand Canal between the Accademia and the Salute, so the route barely changes. It's open 10:00 to 18:00 with last entrance at 17:00, and it's closed on Tuesdays (and 25 December). The museum advises buying a timed slot online. (official visit page)
- Short on budget? See the Doge's Palace from outside. At €35 it's the biggest ticket of the day. The arcades and the waterfront facade are free to walk past, and the basilica, the Frari and San Rocco come to €30 together.
- Want more of the square? The St Mark's Square Museums ticket also covers the Museo Correr, so you can add it straight after the Doge's Palace and start the San Polo half after a late lunch.
- Coming on a day trip in 2027? Venice charged day-trippers an access fee on set days in 2026, and the city has said it returns in 2027. Dates, hours and the price for 2027 weren't confirmed when I checked, so check before you go on the official access fee portal. Overnight guests in the city are handled differently; the portal explains who pays and who registers.
- Pick your day. Tuesday to Saturday works for every stop. On Sundays the basilica opens at 14:00 and the Frari at 13:00, so flip the day: San Polo and Dorsoduro first, St Mark's last. The Accademia lists Tuesday to Sunday hours, so check its calendar before a Monday visit, and keep the Guggenheim swap for a day that isn't a Tuesday.
FAQ
Can you see Venice in one day on foot?
You can see the core of it: St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the Rialto Bridge, the Frari, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, the Accademia and the Salute, all on foot with a single crossing of the Grand Canal. Murano, Burano and the Lido need a separate day by boat.
How much walking is this Venice itinerary?
Passage AI puts the walks between the seven stops at about 32 minutes, measured in straight lines. The longest legs are Rialto to the Frari (about 9 minutes) and San Rocco to the Accademia (about 8). The walk back from the Salute to San Marco over the Accademia Bridge is extra.
Do you need to book St Mark's Basilica in advance?
Book it. Tickets are named, and the basilica lets you in only during the time slot you booked. Basilica admission is €10 for individual bookings, and the official webshop is linked from basilicasanmarco.it.
Is the Doge's Palace ticket the same as St Mark's Basilica?
No. The basilica is run by the Procuratoria di San Marco and sells its own tickets. The Doge's Palace is on the St Mark's Square Museums ticket from the city museums foundation: €35, or €30 online at least 30 days ahead.
Do day-trippers have to pay the Venice access fee?
In 2026 the fee applied on set days in spring and summer, and the city has said it returns in 2027. Check the dates and rules on the official access fee portal before you go.
What is the best day of the week for this walk?
Tuesday to Saturday, when the basilica opens at 9:30 and every stop keeps full hours. Avoid a Sunday morning start at St Mark's (the basilica opens at 14:00), and check the Accademia calendar for a Monday.
How this was made: planned in Passage AI on 2 November 2026, facts checked against the official sites of St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia), the Basilica dei Frari, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Basilica della Salute and the City of Venice access fee portal, written by Edward.
