Vienna in one day on foot: a walking itinerary

This Vienna one day walking itinerary covers the old town inside the Ring, the boulevard that circles it, plus the art museum just across it. You start at St. Stephen's Cathedral when its visitor hours open, walk the Graben to St. Peter's, tour the Hofburg's Imperial Apartments, have lunch at Zum Schwarzen Kameel, rest in the Volksgarten, spend the afternoon in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and finish with Sacher-Torte behind the opera and a schnitzel at Figlmüller. Nine stops, about 47 minutes of walking between them, and no leg longer than 9 minutes.

I built the day in Passage AI in October 2026 for a Wednesday. I added the nine stops, gave each one a time and ran the Need tickets? scan. Hours, prices and ticket rules are checked against the official sites and linked below.

Last checked: Oct 2026. Prices and hours change. Open the linked official page before you go.

The Plan list with each stop's time and the walk minutes between stops.

1. St. Stephen's Cathedral, 9:15

Start at the cathedral, the centre of the old town. The building is open from 6:00, but visitor hours (when you walk the nave as a sightseer rather than for worship) run Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 16:30. On Sundays and holidays they start at 13:00. Services can change these times at short notice. (official site)

A self-guided visit costs €8 for adults and €3 for children up to 14, with no booking. You can also go up. The North Tower has a lift to a platform beside the Pummerin, Austria's largest bell, and the South Tower, the 136.4 m spire locals call the "Steffl", is 343 steps to the old watchmen's room. Each tower is €8, open 9:00 to 19:00. Public catacomb tours leave several times a morning (10:00, 11:00 and 11:30, Monday to Saturday) for €8. The All-Inclusive ticket at €29 covers the cathedral with a phone audio guide, both towers, a catacomb tour and the Dom Museum, and stays valid for a year. (tickets and tours)

Leave big luggage at the hotel: the cathedral doesn't allow suitcases or trolleys and has no storage.

When you reach a stop, Passage AI's Guide opens a card like this one with the story of the place. Tap Listen to hear it read aloud while you look up at the roof.

2. Peterskirche, 10:15

A short walk up the Graben brings you to St. Peter's, a Baroque church on Petersplatz, a small square off the Graben. It's open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 19:00 and from 9:00 at weekends. Weekday Masses are at 11:00, 12:30 and 17:00, so 10:15 gets you inside before the first one. (official site)

3. The Hofburg: Imperial Apartments, 10:45

The Hofburg was the main palace of the Habsburgs. The ticket you want is the Sisi Museum day ticket, which takes you through the rooms Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth lived in. It's open daily 10:00 to 16:30, last entry 16:00. Entry runs on fixed admission times, so buy online to hold a slot. Bulky items and luggage of any kind aren't allowed, and there's no left-luggage storage. (opening hours)

One thing changes this autumn. The Sisi Museum rooms are closed until the redesigned museum opens on 19 November 2026, so until 18 November the day ticket is reduced to €15 for adults and €9 for children 6 to 18 and covers the Imperial Apartments. Prices change again from 19 November. (tickets and prices)

Give it about an hour and a half, then walk back past Michaelerplatz toward the Graben.

4. Lunch at Zum Schwarzen Kameel, 12:45

Zum Schwarzen Kameel is at Bognergasse 5, and its own history goes back to 1618. The ground floor is a brasserie serving from breakfast to late: ham, salads, sandwiches and warm dishes. It's open daily 8:00 to midnight, with the kitchen serving until 22:30. You don't need a reservation for the bar, and the site has a booking page if you want a set table. (official site)

If you'd rather have Kaiserschmarrn for lunch, Demel is at Kohlmarkt 14, on the street that runs up to the Hofburg's Michaelerplatz entrance. It's open daily 10:00 to 19:00 and doesn't take reservations. (official site)

5. Volksgarten, 2:00

Walk back through the Hofburg to Heldenplatz and into the Volksgarten next to it. The park opened in 1823 as Vienna's first public park, and the Austrian Federal Gardens, who look after it, call its rose garden one of the most beautiful in Vienna. Sit down here for twenty minutes between the palace and the museum. In the plan, the pin is the Volksgarten Pavillon inside the park. Gate hours aren't on the gardens' official site, so check before you go if you plan to come back late.

6. Kunsthistorisches Museum, 2:30

Austria's largest art museum, across the Ring under the octagonal dome. It's open daily 10:00 to 18:00 and until 21:00 on Thursdays, and staff start clearing the rooms 15 minutes before closing. Adults pay €22 online or €24 at the desk, and visitors under 19 get in free. (plan your visit)

Two and a half hours covers the highlights of the picture gallery and a coffee in the museum's café-restaurant, which is open during museum hours (kitchen until 16:30). If you visit on a Thursday, you can stay into the evening.

7. Vienna State Opera, 5:15

The opera house was the first big building on the Ring, finished in 1869. Walk around the outside on your way to cake. If you want to see the inside, the standard guided tour takes about 40 minutes and costs €18 for adults (€14 under 27, seniors and children 6 and up). Tour dates go online around the middle of each month for the month after, so check the calendar for your date. (guided tours)

8. Café Sacher Wien, 5:30

Right behind the opera at Philharmoniker Straße 4, the café of the Hotel Sacher serves the Original Sacher-Torte, the chocolate and apricot cake Franz Sacher created in the 19th century. It's open daily 7:00 to 23:00. The café asks guests to reserve in advance to be sure of a table, in person or online. (official site)

9. Dinner at Figlmüller Wollzeile, 7:15

End the day back near the cathedral. Johann Figlmüller opened his first wine tavern on Wollzeile in 1905, and the restaurant at Wollzeile 5 is where the family's famous Wiener Schnitzel comes from. It's open daily 11:00 to 22:30, with the kitchen open until 21:30. Book a table on its site or by phone. (official site)

What to skip or swap

  • Short on time? Skip the inside of the Hofburg. The courtyards, Michaelerplatz and Heldenplatz are open to walk through, and that frees an hour and a half for the museum or the cathedral towers.
  • Looking for Café Central? The café in Palais Ferstel closed on 16 March 2026 for a full renovation, with reopening scheduled for winter 2026. In the meantime the same owners run DECENTRAL at Freyung. (official notice)
  • Visiting on a Sunday or holiday? The cathedral's visitor hours start at 13:00, so swap the morning: do the Hofburg first at 10:00 and fit St. Stephen's in after lunch, before the museum.
  • Visiting from 19 November? The redesigned Sisi Museum opens that day with more rooms, and the Hofburg ticket prices change. Check the new price on the official page.
  • Thursday works best for art. The Kunsthistorisches Museum stays open until 21:00, so you can move the museum after the Sacher stop and eat later.
  • Want Schönbrunn too? The palace is outside the Ring, well beyond this walk. Give it its own morning.

FAQ

Can you see Vienna in one day on foot?

You can see the old town and the Ring in one day. This plan covers St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Graben, the Hofburg, the Volksgarten, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the State Opera, with lunch, cake and dinner along the way. Schönbrunn and the Belvedere need a second day.

How much walking is this itinerary?

About 47 minutes between stops, measured in straight lines at 4.8 km/h. That's about 3.8 km. The longest leg is the 9-minute walk from Café Sacher to Figlmüller, and the shortest is the minute from the opera to Sacher.

Do you need to book the Hofburg in advance?

It's a good idea. The Imperial Apartments run on fixed admission times, and the official site recommends buying online to secure your slot. Until 18 November 2026 an adult ticket is €15, while the Sisi Museum rooms are closed for their redesign.

Is Café Central open?

Not in autumn 2026. The café in Palais Ferstel closed on 16 March 2026 for renovation, and its site says reopening is scheduled for winter 2026. The owners' DECENTRAL café at Freyung is open in the meantime.

What day of the week is best for this walk?

Monday to Saturday. On Sundays and holidays the cathedral's visitor hours start at 13:00. Thursday is the best day if you want more time in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which stays open until 21:00.
