Weston, Missouri in one day on foot: a walking itinerary

This Weston, MO one day itinerary keeps you on foot in a river town of a few blocks, about 30 minutes from downtown Kansas City. Weston's historic downtown dates from 1837, and in the steamboat years the town was one of the busiest ports on the Missouri River. A flood in 1881 moved the river about two miles away, and the old downtown stayed behind. You start at the visitor office on Main Street, walk through the free Weston Historical Museum, pass the 1845 Saint George Hotel, eat lunch at America Bowman Restaurant, taste wine in a former 1867 church at Pirtle Winery, and end the day underground on the 3 p.m. tour of the Weston Brewing Company's stone lagering cellars. Six stops, and every one of them sits within about two blocks of the others.

I built the day in Passage AI for a Saturday in November. Saturday matters here: the brewery's public tours run on Saturdays, the museum and the visitor office are both open, and the winery stays open until 7 p.m. Hours below are checked against each place's official site and linked inline.

Last checked: Oct 2026. Small-town hours change with the season. Open the linked official page before you drive up.

Passage AI plan list for Weston with six stops from the Weston Chamber of Commerce at 11:00 AM to Weston Brewing Co at 3:00 PM, with 1 to 2 minute walks between them
The Plan list with a time on each stop and walk minutes between them.

1. Weston visitor office, 526 Main Street, 11:00

The Weston Chamber of Commerce runs the visitor office at 526 Main Street. It's open Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Monday. (chamber contact page) Stop in and ask what's on that weekend.

The chamber also runs the Historic Homes and Buildings Tour, a 90-minute guided walk of downtown's old buildings, churches and homes with a short stop at the history museum. It costs $15 per person, or $20 with Laurel Hill Cemetery, which adds half an hour and a three-block uphill walk from Short Street. Tours run on Saturdays and Sundays by appointment, start at 526 Main Street, take groups of about 15, and must be booked before 2 p.m. on the Thursday before. Call 816-640-2909 or email Director@Westonmo.com. (chamber walking tours) If you book one, take it in place of stops 1 to 3 and pick the day up again at lunch.

2. Weston Historical Museum, 601 Main Street, 11:15

A block up Main Street, the Weston Historical Museum has told the town's story since 1960: steamboats and westward expansion, the military ties to nearby Fort Leavenworth, the heartache of slavery, and the farming that kept the town going. Among the exhibits are Civil War artifacts, a handmade First World War quilt signed by First Lady Edith Wilson, a working gramophone with records, and pioneer tools.

Admission is free. For 2026 the museum is open March to December, Wednesday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. It's closed Monday and Tuesday. (Weston Historical Museum)

The museum fills in the early story. The Lewis and Clark Expedition stopped on an island near today's city hall. Weston grew up as the first settlement of the 1836 Platte Purchase, on the western edge of the United States, and by 1850 more than 265 steamboats a year docked here. Buffalo Bill Cody lived in Weston for a time. Then the 1881 flood shifted the river into an old channel about two miles away, and the port was gone. (Weston, Missouri, Wikipedia)

3. The Saint George Hotel, 500 Main Street, 12:00

Walk back down Main Street. The Saint George Hotel opened in 1845 for steamboat captains, tradesmen and travelers, and it is still a hotel today. (Saint George Hotel) The red brick building with the mansard roof and the white columned corner door is the one on the cover photo of this post. Look at it from the street; rooms are for overnight guests, and booking is on the hotel's page or at 816-640-9902.

4. Lunch at America Bowman Restaurant, 12:15

Lunch is a short walk east at 500 Welt Street, the same address as the brewery and O'Malley's pub. America Bowman Restaurant serves Irish pub food: Scotch eggs, corned beef egg rolls, bangers and mash, and a Weston apple tart for dessert. It's open daily, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on weekends it also serves breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Reserve a table online or call 816-640-5235. (America Bowman Restaurant)

5. Pirtle Winery, 502 Spring Street, 1:30

Pirtle Winery is around the corner on Spring Street. The Pirtle family opened it in July 1978, and the tasting room is in a former Lutheran Evangelical church that German immigrants built in 1867. The tasting room and gift shop are on the second floor, a cellar wine bar fills the first floor, and there's a vine-covered wine garden next door. The wine is made and bottled in the production building across the street. The list runs from reds and whites to meads, fruit wines and cider. (Pirtle Winery, our story)

Pirtle is open Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 816-640-5728. (Pirtle Winery)

6. Weston Brewing Company cellar tour, 3:00

End the day under the street. John Georgian, a German immigrant, founded the Weston Brewing Company in 1842 and brought lager brewing with him. Lager has to be stored below 60 degrees for more than six weeks, so he cut stone cellars deep into the ground and used ice from the river in winter. The brewery calls it one of the first lager breweries in the United States. In the early 1900s it was the largest manufacturing plant in Platte County and sponsored the first Kansas City Royals baseball team. (Weston Brewing Company)

The tour runs on Saturdays at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. It takes about an hour and covers the current brewery, the historic underground cellars, the "secret 4th cellar" and a tasting. Tickets are $10 per person over 14, free under 14, with up to 20 people per tour. Reservations are encouraged but not required: call 816-640-5235. (brewery tours)

After the tour, O'Malley's 1842 Pub at the same address pours the brewery's beers. Its current music schedule has live sets on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. (O'Malley's 1842 Pub)

How Optimize ordered the day

Passage AI Optimize preview reading Smoother day found, minus 1 min walking, with the Weston Historical Museum and the Weston Chamber of Commerce swapped and buttons Keep as is and Apply new order
Optimize's preview: "Smoother day found, −1 min walking", with the museum and the visitor office swapped.

I added the six stops in the order above and set a time on each. Optimize found an order with 1 minute less walking, starting at the Weston Historical Museum and visiting the chamber office second. Both orders work, since both open at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. I kept the original one so the day starts with the chamber's local tips before the museum. Tap Apply if you'd rather take the shorter walk.

Optimize shows a preview with each stop's old position before anything changes, and nothing saves until you press Apply.
