Stillwater, Minnesota in one day on foot: a walking itinerary

This Stillwater MN one day itinerary keeps you on foot from the first stop to dinner. Downtown Stillwater sits in a narrow strip between the bluffs and the St. Croix River, so the eight stops on this walk fit inside about a kilometre and a half: the 1870 Historic Courthouse on the south hill, lunch on Main Street, Lowell Park and the Lift Bridge on the river, a guided tour of the Warden's House, Pioneer Park on the north hill, a taproom, and dinner in the old Freight House.

I built the day in Passage AI for a Saturday in late October. I added the stops, set a time for each, and ran the Need tickets? scan. Hours and prices below are checked against each place's official site and linked.

Last checked: Oct 2026. Hours change with the seasons here, and several places run shorter hours from November. Open the linked page before you go.

Stop by stop

The Plan list in Passage AI, with a time on each stop and the walk between them.

1. Washington County Historic Courthouse, 10:00

Start on the south hill, at 101 West Pine Street. The county calls it the longest-standing courthouse in Minnesota, and it served as the county seat for more than 100 years. Explore Minnesota dates it to 1870. Today it's a Washington County park with guided and self-guided tours. It's also where the city's self-guided downtown walking tour begins, and you can pick up the tour map here.

The county's courthouse page lists weekend hours of 10:00 to 4:30 and weekday hours of 9:00 to 4:30, closed on most county holidays. Check before you go: that page has been hard to load lately, and tour times can change.

2. Lunch at Lolo American Kitchen, 11:30

Walk down the hill to Main Street. Lolo American Kitchen is at 233 Main Street South and opens at 11:30 every day, according to its own site. An early lunch leaves the afternoon free for the Warden's House tour.

3. Lowell Park and the riverfront, 12:45

Lowell Park runs along the St. Croix in front of downtown. It's stop 1 on the city's downtown walking tour, a self-guided tour built by the Stillwater Heritage Preservation Commission, with a short video for each of its 14 stops. Several of those stops are on this route: the Lift Bridge, the Freight House, the courthouse and the Warden's House.

4. The Stillwater Lift Bridge, 1:15

The Lift Bridge has crossed the river since 1931 and went on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It closed to all traffic in August 2017 and reopened in 2020 for people on foot and on bikes only. It's now part of the Loop Trail between Minnesota and Wisconsin, so you can walk out over the river, or all the way across to the Wisconsin side and back.

5. Warden's House Museum, 2:00 tour

Walk north up Main Street to 602 Main Street North. On the way you pass the corner of Myrtle and Main, where the 1848 territorial convention met. Discover Stillwater points to that meeting when it calls the town the birthplace of Minnesota.

The Warden's House was built in 1853 as the home of the territorial and then state prison's wardens. Thirteen wardens lived there until the prison moved to Bayport in 1914. The Washington County Historical Society bought it in 1941 and opened it that June as the second house museum in Minnesota. Tours cover the prison's early years, including its best-known inmates, the Younger brothers of the James-Younger Gang.

You can only see the house on a guided tour. Tours start at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00, Thursday to Sunday, and the house is closed Monday to Wednesday. The museum sells tickets at the door: $10 for adults, $3 for ages 6 to 17. (official page) The historical society lists the house as open seasonally, May to October, so this stop is for a spring, summer or autumn visit.

When you reach a stop, Passage AI's Guide opens a card like this one with the story of the place. Tap Listen to hear it read aloud while you wait for the tour.

6. Pioneer Park, 3:15

Pioneer Park is a few minutes' walk from the Warden's House, on the North Hill above downtown. It's a public park with nothing to book, and a good place to sit for a while before the last two stops.

7. River Siren Brewing, 4:00

Back down on Main Street North, River Siren Brewing has a taproom and food. Its site lists summer hours (May to October) of 11:00 to 11:00 on Saturdays. The site doesn't list winter hours yet, so from November, check before you go.

8. Dinner at The Freight House, 6:00

End by the river. The Freight House is stop 3 on the city's walking tour. The restaurant's site says it occupies the original Stillwater Freight Depot, the first building in Stillwater listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its website shows two different sets of hours, but both have it open on Saturday evenings. Check before you go on any other day.

What Need tickets? flagged, checked against the official sites

Passage AI Need tickets? sheet for the Stillwater day, listing which stops are worth booking ahead
Need tickets? scanned the day and marked three stops as worth a look before you go.

Need tickets? scans the whole trip and marks the stops that may need booking, with a link to each official site. For this day it marked three stops as "Maybe" and the other five as walk-in friendly:

Stop App said Official site says (Oct 2026) My call
Warden's House Museum Maybe Guided tours at 1, 2, 3 and 4, tickets at the door Arrive a few minutes before the tour
Lolo American Kitchen Maybe Stillwater location is first come, first served Nothing to book; go early
The Freight House Maybe No booking details on the site Call ahead on a weekend

The app marked the courthouse, Lowell Park, the Lift Bridge, Pioneer Park and River Siren as walk-in friendly. The parks and the bridge are free and open to everyone.

How the order works

Optimize looked at this day and found an order with 10 minutes less walking. Both orders work. I kept this one so lunch comes before the Warden's House tour and dinner lands at the end of the day by the river; tap Apply if you'd rather take the shorter walk. Optimize shows each stop's old position in a preview, and nothing changes until you press Apply.

What to skip or swap

  • Visiting from November to April? The Warden's House is open May to October only. Spend the extra hour on the rest of the city's walking tour instead: the Lowell Inn, the Commander Mill and the Lumberman's Exchange are all on it, with a video for each stop on the city's tour page.
  • Here Monday to Wednesday? The Warden's House is closed those days. Everything else on this route works, so swap in more of the walking tour.
  • Want a river cruise? Stillwater River Boats ran public lunch and dinner cruises from 10 May to 18 October in 2026, so the season is over for this year. Look for next year's dates on its site in spring.
  • Want a longer walk? The Lift Bridge is part of the Loop Trail between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Walking the whole loop is a separate outing, so give it its own morning; the city's Lift Bridge page links to the trail.
  • Heading south on the river? Red Wing makes a good second river town; try a walking day in Red Wing.

FAQ

Is one day enough for Stillwater, Minnesota?

One day covers downtown well. The historic core between the courthouse on the south hill and the Warden's House on the north end is small enough to walk, with time for a museum tour, two meals and a taproom. Add a second day for the full Loop Trail or, in season, a river cruise.

Can you walk across the Stillwater Lift Bridge?

Yes. It reopened in 2020 for pedestrians and bicycles only and is part of the Loop Trail between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Cars no longer use it.

When is the Warden's House Museum open?

Thursday to Sunday, May to October, by guided tour only. Tours start at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00. Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for ages 6 to 17, paid at the door.

Do you need to book anything for this day?

Not for the main sights. The Warden's House sells tickets at the door, the parks and the Lift Bridge are free, and Lolo's Stillwater location is first come, first served. For dinner at The Freight House on a busy weekend, call ahead.

Why is Stillwater called the birthplace of Minnesota?

The 1848 territorial convention that started Minnesota on the road to statehood met at the corner of Myrtle and Main Streets in downtown Stillwater. The spot is a stop on the city's walking tour.
