The best AI trip planner for walking trips: 5 apps compared
The best AI trip planner for walking trips is the one that plans the day you'll spend on foot: stops in walking order, meals at normal hours, a list of what to book before you fly, and something to read when you reach each place. On those tests, Passage AI comes out ahead of Wanderlog, Mindtrip, Layla and ChatGPT. The other four are good at other jobs. Wanderlog is a strong organizer, Mindtrip and Layla lean toward booking, and ChatGPT writes a decent first draft.
I'm Edward, and I build Passage AI, so read this with that in mind. Every claim about another app links to that app's own homepage, App Store listing or help center, and each one was checked on October 19, 2026. For the Passage AI side, I built a walking day in Edinburgh in the live app the same night.

What a walking trip needs from an AI trip planner
Most AI trip planners focus on the parts of travel you pay for: flights, hotels, tours. On a walking trip, the hard part starts after you land. You need answers about the day itself:
- Is the day in walking order? Stops near each other should sit together, with no doubling back across town.
- Are meals in the plan? A day that skips lunch falls apart by 2 PM.
- Can you reorder a day in one tap? Plans change. Moving one stop shouldn't mean redoing the route by hand.
- What needs a ticket in advance? Timed-entry castles, museums and popular restaurants sell out, and you don't want to find out at the door.
- Is there anything for you at the stop? A story or a few facts turn an address into a place.
- Does the plan open without a signal?
I scored all five apps on those questions, using what each one lists on its own pages.

Passage AI: the best AI trip planner for walking days
Passage AI is built around the day on foot. Type a city, pick dates, and tap "Suggest a day for me". It drafts a full day of real places in walking order, keeps neighboring stops together, and puts breakfast, lunch and dinner at sensible hours. Each stop gets a time, with the walk to the next stop in minutes.
Three tools cover the rest of the checklist:
- Optimize reorders a day into a shorter walk. It keeps meals near their usual hours and shows you the new order and the minutes saved before anything changes. Nothing moves until you tap Apply. It's free, with no limit.
- Need tickets? scans the whole trip and flags up to 12 stops worth booking ahead, each with a short reason and a link to the official site or a ticket search. You book there, then save the confirmation number on the stop.
- Guide turns the day into a deck of stop cards. Each card opens with a story, and Listen reads it aloud in one of five voices. Between stops, Live tour shows landmarks within about 300 m of you.
Your saved trip plans open without a signal. Sharing is free, with edit or view-only links, and friends can read a shared trip without an account.
Best for: first trips to walkable cities, museum-heavy trips with timed entry, and anyone who likes the story behind a place.
Wanderlog: best for organizing a whole trip
Wanderlog is a free trip organizer. Its App Store listing covers flights, hotels and places on one map, drag-and-drop reordering, real-time editing with friends and imported reservations. Its help center says the basic planner stays free for as many trips as you want.
The walking-day tools sit behind Pro. "Pro members can use the optimize route feature," and "Pro members can save their trip plans" for offline use. Wanderlog's help center also has a page that apologizes for travel time estimates "being extremely wrong" in some cases, and says they aren't available for Japanese addresses. The US App Store lists annual Pro plans from $31.99 to $59.99 a year.
Best for: road trips and multi-city trips where the bookings are the hard part. More in Passage AI vs Wanderlog.
Mindtrip: best for chatting through a trip and booking it
Mindtrip calls itself a "personal travel assistant" that learns how you like to travel. It helps you weigh flights, stays and restaurants, and you can "book directly on Mindtrip or have your travel assistant handle the details." It watches for price drops and flight changes. Its iPhone app is free and adds interactive maps with distances, events nearby, guides by locals and a Magic Camera that identifies what you photograph and translates menus.
Mindtrip's pages don't describe meal-timed day plans, a one-tap reorder, a book-ahead scan or audio stories at each stop. Its site links an iPhone app only.
Best for: travelers who want one assistant for flights, hotels and restaurants. More in Passage AI vs Mindtrip.
Layla: best for handing the booking to a person
Layla pairs an AI planner with human travel advisors. You chat about dates, budget and style, Layla builds the trip, then "a real travel advisor checks every detail and books it." Planning with Layla is free, and it sells ready-to-book packages with hotels and experiences. Its App Store listing shows a Layla Premium subscription at $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year.
Layla's homepage and App Store text don't describe walking-order day plans with meals, a reorder button, a book-ahead scan or stories at each stop.
Best for: longer, multi-stop holidays you'd rather have someone else book. More in Passage AI vs Layla.
ChatGPT: a good first draft to check
Plenty of people start a trip plan in ChatGPT. In our ChatGPT Rome test on October 15, 2026, I used chatgpt.com without logging in and asked for a one-day walking itinerary in Rome. The walking order was tight and the meal breaks made sense. Checked against the official sites, two last-entry times were wrong, and the plan left out two tickets: the Pantheon's and the new fee for the Trevi Fountain basin. Its built-in map didn't load.
The answer arrives as text in a chat. To reorder it, save it or open it at the stop, you copy it into another app.
Best for: brainstorming what a city has before you build the real plan.
Testing it: a walking day in Edinburgh
I built a one-day trip to Edinburgh for Wednesday, October 21, 2026, and tapped "Suggest a day for me". It came back with 7 stops in about 10 hours, starting with coffee and cake at Lovecrumbs on West Port and ending with folk music at Sandy Bell's:
- Lovecrumbs, 9:15 AM
- Edinburgh Castle, 10:15 AM
- The Devil's Advocate, lunch at 12:45 PM
- The Real Mary King's Close, 2:15 PM
- Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 4:00 PM
- The Scran & Scallie, dinner at 7:15 PM
- Sandy Bell's, 9:15 PM
The middle of the day stays tight: 7 minutes on foot from the castle to lunch, then 1 minute to Mary King's Close. Walk times are straight-line estimates between stops; Directions opens your maps app for the street route.

Optimize found an order with 8 minutes less walking, swapping the gallery with Mary King's Close and the two evening stops. Both orders work. I kept the original one so dinner comes before the music; tap Apply if you'd rather take the shorter walk.

Need tickets? flagged five stops. Edinburgh Castle and The Real Mary King's Close came back as likely, each with a reason and a ticket link. The castle's own opening times page backs that up: tickets often sell out far in advance, and once they sell out online, the castle sells none at the gate. From October 1 to December 23 it opens at 9:30 AM, with last entry at 4 PM. An adult ticket is £23.50 online or £26.00 at the gate, per its tickets page. For The Real Mary King's Close, book the tour on its official site and check the times before you go.

On the day, the Guide tab turns the plan into stop cards. The first one opens on Lovecrumbs with a short story about West Port, the old street that climbs toward the Grassmarket below Castle Rock. Tap Listen and it reads the story aloud.

None of the other four apps lists that combination for a single day: a walking order with meals, a free reorder, a ticket check and a story at the door.
Which AI trip planner should you use?
For a trip you'll spend on foot, use Passage AI to plan the days. It's the one of the five built around walking order, meal times, book-ahead tickets and a guide at each stop.
- A first trip to a walkable city (Edinburgh, Rome, Lisbon): Passage AI. Suggest a day, check Need tickets?, and open the Guide when you arrive.
- A road trip or a trip with lots of flights and hotels to track: Wanderlog for the logistics, then Passage AI for the days in each city.
- You want someone else to book everything: Layla's travel advisors, or Mindtrip's booking. Plan the walking days in Passage AI once the hotel is set.
- You're still deciding where to go: ChatGPT or Mindtrip for ideas, then build the actual day in Passage AI.
An Android app is coming soon; on Android today you can plan in the browser at mypassage.ai.
FAQ
What is the best AI trip planner for walking?
Passage AI. It builds each day in walking order with meals placed, reorders a day into a shorter walk for free, flags the stops to book ahead, and opens a story at each stop that you can read or hear. Wanderlog, Mindtrip and Layla focus more on organizing and booking whole trips.
Is there a free AI trip planner?
Yes. Passage AI is free to plan by hand, including Optimize and sharing, and its AI features are free up to monthly limits. Wanderlog's basic planner is free, Mindtrip's app is free, Layla says planning is free, and ChatGPT works without an account.
Can ChatGPT plan a walking itinerary?
It can write a good first draft. In our Rome test, ChatGPT's walking order held up, but two last-entry times were wrong and it missed two tickets. Check every hour and ticket rule on the official site before you go.
Which AI trip planner tells you what to book ahead?
Passage AI's Need tickets? scans the whole trip and flags up to 12 stops worth booking ahead, each with a reason and a link to the official site. Wanderlog, Mindtrip and Layla don't list a scan like that on their own pages as of October 2026.
Does Passage AI work offline?
Yes. Your saved trip plans open without a signal.
How this was made: the Edinburgh day was planned in Passage AI on October 19, 2026. Competitor facts were checked the same day against each app's own pages: Wanderlog Help Center, the App Store listings for Wanderlog, Mindtrip and Layla, mindtrip.ai and layla.ai. Edinburgh Castle hours and prices come from edinburghcastle.scot. The ChatGPT result comes from our October 15, 2026 Rome test. Written by Edward.
